Legere studied with John Lewis of the Modern Jazz Quartet, enrolled in the NYU Graduate School of Jazz Studies, was signed to Sony Records, opened for David Bowie on his National Tour, received a NYSCA grant and led the house band at Louisiana Bar and Grill from 1994 – 1996. She then embarked on a 5 year tour of the Pacific Rim where she became a household name for her rocking, rollicking piano antics, spine tingling soul shouting soprano and down to earth blues scholarship.
In the 3 minute video below you see the beginning and end of a ten minute jam on Professor Longhair's classic Pensees sur Mon Idee with her band at Stephen's Talkhouse in Amgansett, Long Island.
In 2001 Phoebe took a year off from her grueling tour schedule to become producer and on air host for Sirius Radio’s Blues Channel where her show: “The Grand Duchess of the Blues and her All American Blues Barbecue” was wildly popular at drivetime. Although Legere’s musical style has varied throughout her career, her style has always remained solidly rooted in the blues.
Legere is a spellbinding performer/lecturer who speaks eloquently about the evolution of American jazz and blues.
