My work reflects my own identity as both Penobscot Indian and contemporary composer. As a Native American, I believe that nature is God and that I have a sacred duty to protect and honor her. But I am also fascinated with how recent scientific discoveries, particularly in biology and physics, have expanded our understanding of the world. I seek to reconcile these views through my music,by combining scientific hypothesis with spiritual and aesthetic intuition.
My work embodies these goals by incorporating experimental sounds and techniques; electronics and acoustic sounds; traditional Native American singing and percussion; and natural sounds taken from field recordings including whales, dolphins, ospreys, ravens, meadow larks, and other good singers of nature.
